Bull Terrier - breed description and character of the dog

In ancient times, such hobbies were inherent in which cruelty was inherent. Many dog breeds were bred in order to participate in the hunt and etch large game, and not to keep the house. In particular, dogs were used as participants in fights between dogs. For a number of people, this was a method of earning money - they put money on one of the animals, while others, usually wealthy people, wanted to attend a spectacular event in order to bring diversity to their quiet life. The child of those harsh times is the bull terrier. The progenitors of these dogs were excellent fighters, but because of the people who were engaged in their breeding, the breed acquired a more elegant look. Therefore, after the ban on cruel and bloody battles, the bull terriers were able to find a new way thanks topeculiar appearance.

 Bull terrier

Name

Along with a lot of terriers, the bulls were bred in the UK. Therefore, the name of the breed refers to the English language. “Bull” means “bull” - it is with these large animals that the bulldogs who took part in the formation of the breed entered the battle. And the word "terrier" indicates the second breed of canine, which participated in the breeding process.

Story

While animal fighting in England did not ban what happened in 1835, the participation of dogs in bull baiting was especially popular. The progenitors of the British Bulldogs participated in these battles. At that time, the appearance of these dogs was different: the limbs were tall, and the head was square and overly wide. These features provided the dog with the ability to quickly fight with massive bulls. But after the ban, the organizers of the fierce battles found other methods of earning money - etching rats and fights between dogs. Due to the smaller size of the participants, the arena could be created in any eatery, where both poor and prosperous people lived.

It soon became clear that the fighting bulldog is practically not suitable for the new format. In such battles it was necessary to have even greater intelligence and dexterity. Unfortunately, strong bulldogs failed to prove their worth in such battles - they turned into a boring action.

Therefore, the breeders began to cross the bulldogs involved in the battles with other varieties of dogs. Breeding along with terriers was a particular prospect. The breed bred had the same strength and stubbornness, while the dogs became more agile and intelligent. The name of the first representatives of the breed received unpretentious: "old-bull-and-terrier". So the ancestors of the current bull terriers were born.

Opportunity to survive

The first representatives of the new breed looked very unusual: a massive body, crooked limbs, an overly wide head with a dull face. But at the same time the received individuals perfectly fulfilled the duties of a fighter. Further generations acquired more pronounced signs of terriers: a sharp face and long legs. But, anyway, to the beautiful appearance of the dogs was still far away.

This preoccupied James Hinks - an admirer of dogs and a merchant. He decided to make the breed look more beautiful without altering the ability of dogs to fight. And a few years later, at a trade show in Birmingim, the trader presented the best result. Hinks realized that it was necessary to work on nobility in appearance, so the new representatives of the individual were completely white. And it was then that the modern name of the breed - the bull terrier.

The first individuals have already absorbed a number of qualities from their ancestors, including endurance, a developed mind, agility and vigor. In Britain, the Bull Terrier instantly began to enjoy the love and respect from the society of dog breeders. The possession of a white bull terrier came into fashion, and with the beginning of the 20th century, breeders revealed to the world the colored breed of these dogs.

Color of bull terriers
In the second half of the nineteenth century, two pets Hinks, nicknamed Madmen and Puss, received champion titles. Despite the obvious differences from the modern representatives of the breed, white bull terriers at that time were already in high demand. Due to the interest of travelers and the military, the breed has come to various countries.

 Color of bull terriers

Nevertheless, a number of serious problems remained, the solution of which required considerable efforts from the breeders. At first, the British government banned the ears of the Bull Terrier, which almost ruined the increased popularity of dogs. The ears, being uncircumcised, looked awful to these dogs. But due to the long work of breeders, soon there were instances whose ears were naturally standing.

But the main difficulty was the fact that the newborn bull terriers with multi-colored wool were subjected to discrimination. Many people were of the opinion that they lacked an external nobility. And from the moment colored dogs began to triumph in English shows, many breeders protested judicial decisions. In their opinion, obtaining colored titles by dogs (which leads to the participation of these dogs in breeding) will lead to the fact that white bull terriers undergo degeneration. Therefore, not only multi-colored individuals, but also white, having colored dogs among their ancestors, lost participation in mating. And this decision almost turned into the disappearance of the breed. Due to the prolonged selection of the white representatives of the breed, the gene pool of bull terriers has become more scarce. In addition, dogs acquired from predecessors - white British terriers - a set of defects: from deafness to blue eyes and infertility.

By the mid-twentieth century, there were more puppies with diseases. And only in order to avoid the degeneration of the breed, colored individuals were allowed to participate in the selection. Experts in due time recalled that several years ago the champion title was obtained by a white bull terrier whose ancestors were multi-colored individuals.

Victory
It is noteworthy that initially those who started the first dogs after breeding a bulldog with a terrier, were condescending to the white Hinx bull terriers, considering them unsuitable copies for fighting. Breeders confidently stated that a beautiful dog is unlikely to be a great fighter. Then Hinks became a participant in the betting, the result of which forever changed the history of the bull terriers. He led his dog named Puss - a white bull terrier weighing forty pounds - against a more familiar and old dog at 60 pounds of weight. For some thirty minutes, Puss mercilessly dealt with her, and James, who won the dispute, won five pounds sterling and a box of fine champagne.A favorite of Hinks Puss, who almost did not suffer in a fight, a day later received the title of champion at the show exhibition.

Breed standard

It is rather unusual that the standard of the bull terrier breed is not very clear. The weight range is from 17 to 32 kg, and the height can be from 31 to 46 cm. Only miniature representatives of the breed have a number of restrictions on height. Usually his height is less than 36 cm. When the weight of the dog is in the range of 19-31 kg, it is important to pay attention to the fact that the dog does not look too full or, conversely, lean.

The main aspect of the standard is strong build and developed muscles. The head has a low landing, massive, elongated, egg-shaped. Does not have distortions or roughnesses. Bite in the form of scissors, the lower jaw has tremendous power. Nostrils are clearly visible, open.

If a representative of the breed is white, then spots of a different color are allowed to have only on the head or ears. If the color is white, then the white color should be inferior in its vastness to others.
