When the weather is warm in the yard and a lot of insects are flying, any person or animal outside can be bitten by a wasp, bee, gadfly and other similar air inhabitants. Usually, the cat itself causes an attack, trying to catch something flying, moving and buzzing. Or stumble upon a wasp nest and start exploring - what is it? As a result, the case ends with a bitten face and even (sometimes) tongue. The defending insects do not reach the body - a furry saves the fluffy hunter. How can you help an animal that has been attacked by a biting insect?
How dangerous are insect bites to cats?
When a cat is young and inexperienced, for her everything is of interest - including insects.First of all, they are interesting as an object with which you can play catch-up, trying to catch it. So, do not be surprised that this often ends with bites.
When a cat is bitten by an insect, it is necessary to determine exactly where the bite was produced. If any of the hind legs or the back of the body have suffered, it is not a problem. The body of a healthy cat will independently solve such a problem without the intervention of the owner. Maximum - the paw will swell away, and a few days purr will not be able to run fast, but the body will quickly put everything in order. But a bite in the head or throat - this is already a more serious situation. The poison enters the blood near the face, mouth or nose of the animal and leads to edema of the respiratory tract, which often results in suffocation.
If the defending wasp bites the animal in the eye, then serious complications such as inflammations and suppurations can occur. For allergic cats, insect bites are quite dangerous.
Important! Wasp or bee stings are quite capable of killing an animal that is sensitive to poison - two or three bites cause intoxication and death.
Symptoms
- Some place swelled up and everything turned red.
- Animal shakes foot or head.
- The cat has a lot of saliva.
- The animal behaves restlessly, trying to get a paw to the stung place and scratch it.
If the animal is allergic, then it is expressed as follows:
- breathing becomes difficult and shortness of breath appears;
- heart begins to beat very often;
- coordination of movements is broken;
- there is a state of shock.
Although any cat can be bitten in the city, but most often similar situations occur when the owners leave for the country, taking their pets with them. And it is not always possible to get (and get through) to the clinic that treats animals. Therefore, in such cases, all hope is only on the knowledge of the owner and the ability to independently provide first aid.
What you need to do - first aid
If the cat has suffered on the street (which happens most often), it must be immediately brought into the apartment, placed in some not very hot place and left alone.After a while she will come to his senses.
If the cat was stung by a wasp, then there is no sting in the wound, but the bee or the bumblebee is left at the bite, and they themselves die. The owner must take the tweezers and gently remove the sting left by the insects. The procedure is painful, so the animal is better for someone to keep. When delivering, be extremely careful to:
- don't hurt the cat;
- do not crush the sting, otherwise the poison contained in it will enter the cat's body.
When aspen or bee sting on a bitten place, it is necessary to put a cold compress to help relieve swelling and eliminate itching. You can use the ice - wrap it in a bag of polyethylene or put in a clean cloth. Instead of ice, you can also put meat or chicken in the freezer.
In such cases, a compress from soda also provides good help: dissolve soda in boiled water, moisten a clean cloth and apply to the bitten place. When carrying out manipulations, it would be good to talk to your cat, because he is suffering and needs the caring hands of a loving owner.
Also, the bitten place must be regularly cleaned with a solution of nine percent.vinegar - it is mixed with water in a ratio of one to one. You can wipe the usual solution with dissolved soap.
The common liquid ammonia relieves the pain well: a cotton wool is moistened in it and a bitten place is wiped.
Medical assistance
The bites of bees are quite painful, and the animal experiences all sorts of inconveniences:
- with a bite in the paw for 3-4 days, limping remains.
- a bite in the nose or, worse, in the mouth - strongly interferes with eating.
In these cases, hormonal anti-inflammatory drugs are used. Usually, corticosteroids are prescribed by a doctor, but owners who already face similar problems with their pets sometimes use them themselves.
Prednisolone is most commonly used, sometimes Dexamethasone. Prednisolone is given either in pills or intramuscular injections.
For a cat weighing 3–5 kilograms, it’s enough to give half a 5 mg tablet. Of course, when a bitten pet is aggressive or has too much drooling, it will not be easy to feed him medicine.
It is better to make an injection. The injection has one significant advantage - it works faster.Every experienced owner of cats probably has a veterinary first aid kit with the most necessary first aid for a pet. It is very good if it always contains an ampoule with prednisone and a pair of insulin syringes. If, after an insect bite, the animal suffers from pain, and the bite is swollen, then an intramuscular injection should be made into the thigh. And do it twice a day for about 3-4 days.
Visit to the clinic
As a rule, when the cat is bitten by an insect, the owner is quite capable of dealing with the effects of the bite at home. But there are cases when a visit to the vet is simply necessary:
- The animal appears allergic angioedema.
- The cat was bitten by several insects and the amount of poison in the blood is large.
- Small cat - less than six months. Kittens have a high sensitivity to all kinds of poisons.
In adult koshen bee stings do not cause consequences. But if there are problems with immunity, then bad consequences can occur up to anaphylactic shock and death.
After the bite was found, you need to watch the animal a little - whether the appetite is in order, whether the cat has become lethargic and apathetic.In fluffy ones (Siberian, Angora, and others), one should carefully look under the jaw - whether the neck has swollen.
What not to do
- Use menthol irritant agents intended for the treatment of humans (such as Fenistil).
- Give your pet antihistamine pills like Suprastin or Tavegila. Efficiency from them is zero and they will not help the animal.
If there is a slight reaction to the bite, the doctor will make an examination, prescribe treatment and send the owners along with the animal home. Another thing, if he sees that anaphylactic shock is manifested. A reaction of this type can occur immediately, as soon as there was a bite. If the cat does not help, then she will die within an hour or two.
Signs of anaphylaxis
- the animal is either sluggish or strongly agitated;
- vomiting;
- pallor or blueness of mucous membranes;
- the cat is breathing hard, wheezing;
- pulse becomes frequent, weakens;
- convulsions go through the body, the animal involuntarily urinates.
The veterinarian inserts a special tube, supplies oxygen through it, chops adrenaline and puts on an IV. The cat spends at the clinic for at least 24 hours - the doctor must make sure that she is fine.
Prevention
- Protect the room by putting mosquito nets on the windows.
- Destroy on the territory of the cottage all the wasp nests.
- Feed the pet, putting food and water in the room, not on the street.
- Treat your cat with repellents.
Most of the cats, without any negative consequences, endure the bites of various insects. But each one of a thousand cats may experience anaphylactic shock, which is the cause of its death. Therefore, each owner must be ready to provide timely assistance. You need to know: if the cat was bitten earlier, and there were no signs of allergy - so, perhaps, it will continue.
