Blue fox is the rarest species of all fur animals. That is why hunting these animals in our time is strictly prohibited by law. However, the solution to this problem was found; today, the blue fox is rather actively and quite successfully bred in captivity, having the opportunity to get valuable fur without breaking the law. At the moment, these animals are the most common fur animals that are kept in cages.
Appearance of blue fox
Blue fox is a small beast of predatory animals, belonging to members of the canine family. In appearance, the fox is very similar to a fox, the difference is, perhaps, only in the color of fur, as well as in size - the fox is slightly smaller than the red predator. In addition, this canine is more of a squat than a fox, and has a slightly shorter face. The ears of a fox have a rounded shape, they are almost invisible behind the winter coat of the animal. This warns against frostbite in the cold season.
The average length of blue fox is about half a meter. The maximum length at the same time reaches 75 centimeters, without tail. The tail on average adds another quarter to the length of the body. Despite the fact that at first glance the size of the fox is quite impressive, the animal has a relatively small body weight. Adult males weigh a maximum of 3.5 kilograms, while females weigh only 3 kilograms.
In spring, around March-April, foxes begin to moult. This process continues until about June.In the fall, molting begins again, usually in September and lasts until December. Experts say that the most beautiful and high-quality fur of the blue fox is observed in winter, mainly in January and February.
Blue Fox Habitats
Blue fox lives in the tundra. For the life of these animals choose mostly open hilly areas. They live in burrows, which are organized independently, digging up whole underground tunnels in the sandy hills or on the coast. For the arrangement of holes, the arctic fox always selects the terrain not far from the water. Unfortunately, there are not so many places in the tundra where it is possible to make a hole, so for life animals can use the same tunnels for a very long time, for decades, and in some cases even hundreds, leaving housing for future generations.
What eats?
Despite the fact that arctic fox is considered to be a predator, various plants are also included in the diet of this animal. Of course, the basis of the blue fox menu is birds, as well as various small rodents. This representative does not refuse the dog and the fish, and there may even be one that was thrown ashore.Arctic foxes are, in a sense, scavengers, as they sometimes eat up leftover food left by polar bears. Quite often they steal prey from hunters, pulling it straight from traps or snares.
Harvesting foxes, the fox mainly uses well-developed hearing and smell. Canine rely on vision to a lesser extent. It is possible to determine the arctic fox not only by its appearance, but also by a peculiar yelping that strongly resembles the voice of an ordinary domestic dog.
How to keep at home?
Breeding blue fox at home is not such an easy task, therefore, the future farmer must first submerge all the details of such an activity. This enterprise will be successful only if all the features are taken into account. It is important to pay attention to all factors, starting with the location of the farm, the organization of cells and enclosures and ending with the feeding and breeding of young stock. It is also very important to understand how the new generation of arctic foxes inherits the color of the fur in order to improve the quality of the coat of their pets every time.
It is recommended to choose the territories located as far north as possible to place the farm. Thus, from animals you can get the highest quality fur. Of course, it is best to place the company in the tundra. The terrain is best suited flat and dry. Well, if the area around will be surrounded by trees and shrubs, they will provide protection from the winds, as well as create a good environment for the animals.
