White spots on nails: whether to worry
What is a white spot on the surface of the nail? Simply put, this is a section of the nail that has ceased to be transparent.
Do I need to look for the cause of its formation, if it does not cause discomfort or pain? It depends primarily on the frequency of white specks. If they disturb you extremely rarely (no more than once a year) and pass quickly, appearing only on 1-2 nails, then you have no serious reason for anxiety.Their appearance is most likely due to an imbalance in nutrition or a lack of vitamins.
In cases where the spots appear frequently and in large numbers, and especially if their appearance is accompanied by a change in the state of the nail plate (tearing, brittleness, bumps or cavities), you should start looking for the causes of the changes. Also should be alerted and the emergence of new spots.
Separately, it should be said about the appearance of white spots on the nails of pregnant women, nursing mothers and children of different ages. At first, their appearance is due to the load that the body is experiencing, as well as a deficiency of vitamins and trace elements. In children, the causes are more often found in age-related changes in the body: restructuring of the hormonal background, changes in the rate of metabolic processes, etc. Over time, they pass without a trace.
Causes of white spots on the nails
What signals the frequent appearance of white patches on the nails? Among the reasons for their appearance are:
- Lack of vitamins, unbalanced nutrition, metabolic disorders, which may be the result of frequent diets, refusal of protein foods, fasting or overeating, etc.
- Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular or excretory system.
And also white spots may be due to:
- fungal skin and nails;
- stress, lack of sleep, depression;
- microtrauma of the nail as a result of inept manicure;
- contact of hands with aggressive household chemicals, etc.
However, for the diagnosis of white spots alone, of course, is not enough. To complete the picture, the doctor takes into account not only their presence, but also their number, location, condition of the nail itself. There will also be asked clarifying questions about the presence of chronic diseases, heredity, lifestyle, and some others.
After receiving all the necessary information, the doctor will be able to determine the reason for their appearance. If their source is serious health complications, then the primary disease should be treated first. As you recover, white spots will stop bothering you.
If the reasons for their formation are not so serious, then it is quite possible to cope with them with home methods aimed at strengthening the nail plate, maintaining one’s own immunity and general healing of the body.
