There is a common misconception that this problem occurs exclusively in children. In fact, people of any age and gender may encounter it, but more often young girls and old people.
Causes of
All etiological factors can be combined in one phrase - the impact of an unfavorable environment on dry skin prone to dry hands. So why do chicks appear? There can be several reasons:
- Exposure to cold and wind;
- The combination of cold and wet weather;
- Frequent use of aggressive household chemicals;
- Hypovitaminosis;
- Insufficient moisturizing of too dry skin.
In children and girls, the skin of the hands is often very thin and rather dry, so they are more likely to suffer from chicks.In addition, they often neglect the rules of behavior in the cold and do not wear gloves or mittens.
The development mechanism of pimples
In cold weather, one of the protective mechanisms of the human body is a spasm of skin vessels. This allows the environment to give less heat. In such conditions, the skin of the hands receives the minimum amount of blood, and, consequently, nutrients. This contributes to the development of signs of its atrophy: cracks, dryness, redness and itching.
In windy weather, a large amount of heat is given by convection; if the skin is wet, by evaporation. This accelerates the appearance of pimples in his arms. Everyone knows that if you wet your hands in the cold, the skin will crack and begin to peel off. These same symptoms can be considered the first manifestation of frostbite. In the first stage, the skin will become white, and then purple-red with a bluish tinge, bubbles will appear in the second stage. The third stage is characterized by necrosis and can lead to loss of fingers or the entire limb. Therefore, the sensitivity to cold should pay attention.
Chemicals are removed from the skin surface of the protective layer of the epidermis, which is manifested peeling and leads to the development of microcracks and itching. A chemical burn may also occur.Lack of vitamins, especially vitamin A, leads to impaired regeneration and normal functioning of the epithelium of the skin, which causes the appearance of chicks.

- When the temperature drops, always wear gloves on your hands. The stronger the frost, the warmer this item of clothing should be. In windy weather, even with warm enough air, it is better to wear light gloves.
- Use moisturizing or nourishing hand cream. Fortunately, there are a lot of them now and you can choose the right one. There are even special winter options and products for dry skin prone to flaking. The drier the skin, the fatter the cream should be.
- Never leave home or draft with wet hands. This also applies to non-absorbed hand cream. First, you should remove the excess cream, wet your hands with a towel and only then go out, otherwise the cream can act like water.
- During home cleaning, you should wear heavy household gloves. Even harmless, at first glance, dishwashing detergent with glycerin, vitamins and other advertising on the label can dry the skin of hands.
- Balanced nutrition is the main prevention of hypovitaminosis. It should be borne in mind that vitamin A, the lack of which causes dry skin, is contained in products not of plant, but of animal origin. Most of it is in the liver.
What are dangerous chicks
Peeling and cracks in the skin of the hands are not just a cosmetic defect, but important symptoms of a violation of the main protective barrier.Through microtrauma, bacteria, viruses and fungi that cause both local and common diseases can penetrate deep into tissues.
Infection of the skin surface occurs constantly, but the epidermis prevents microorganisms from penetrating into the bloodstream and spreading throughout the body. Even defects invisible to the naked eye can be the entrance gate of infection. It is worth remembering this when going out in cold weather or refusing hand cream. Always follow the rules for preventing the appearance of pimples and begin their treatment immediately after the appearance.
