How to teach a child to roll over

The ability to roll over, along with the independent retention of the head, is considered one of the first physical skills of the child. On this basis, you can determine the development of the crumbs, to judge the state of his health. Usually, babies begin to roll over from the back to the stomach at the age of three months. However, this may happen sooner or later. Pediatricians consider the norm to be between 2 and 6 months old. So, if your five-month baby is still not turning, this is not a cause for alarm. Perhaps he just needs to help in mastering this difficult skill.

How to teach a child to roll over

Physiotherapy

It so happens that a child, moving by nature, quickly and ahead of time masters all the skills he needs. But if your child is sedentary and large, it is much more difficult to roll over. This will help him exercise therapy. Physical therapy will prepare the muscles of the child for the upcoming loads and accelerate the process of learning to turn over.

Physical exercise should be in a good mood, when the child does not hurt, he is not capricious and not hungry. Put the baby on a hard surface and undress. First you need to do a warm-up. To do this, take the feet of the baby and twist them in both directions so as to stretch all the joints and tendons thoroughly. After that, twist the legs in the knees, and then the pelvis. Be sure to do the exercise "bike".

After that, carefully work your arms - bend the joints in the area of the hands, elbows, shoulders. Suggest a child to grab your two fingers and slightly lift the crumbs. Be careful that the child suddenly does not let go of the fingers and does not hit the head. When the body is completely stretched and ready, you can begin to directly train the crumbs to roll over.

  1. Put the child on his back and take his one knee. If in your hands the right knee, you need to throw it as if by the left leg. This will unwittingly encourage your child to start rolling over. Such a movement will begin a maneuver, and your crumbs will have nothing left to do but finish it. In addition, in this way the baby will understand the technique of performing the action.
  2. If the child does not want to roll over, perhaps he needs support. To do this, offer him one finger. The baby will just grab it in the process of twisting the legs and with the help of such a support will quickly turn over.
  3. It sometimes happens that the child turns with pleasure with her mother's help, but he does not take any initiative. In this case, you can use the motivating factor. Attract a baby with a bright rattle, a bunch of keys, an apple. The new object will cause a genuine interest in the child, and since he cannot move in any way, he will try to roll over.
  4. To the baby turned from the belly to the back, you need more often spread it on the tummy. At the same time, place a small roller out of a towel under his shoulders so that he learns to stand on the handles.
  5. When the baby learns to stand up well on the handles and hold the head, you can teach him to roll from belly to back as follows. Show your child a beautiful rattle or phone and drive the object to the side. Gradually move the object to the side so that it disappears from its field of view. At this time, you can put on the phone music or ringing rattle. The kid will certainly be interested in the sound and will want to turn. At this time, you should insure the child against falling and gently turn it over. So you show him that he can roll over and expand the field of view.
  6. When practicing a child, it is very important to do exercises in both directions, so that the baby can turn both to the right and to the left. If for some reason the baby turns only in one direction, actively train the opposite side.
  7. You can not do any exercise through pain. If the baby is crying, it means that you are doing something wrong, do not overdo it.

After the baby learns to roll over, it is worth paying special attention to its safety. Now it can not be left on the parental bed unattended - the baby can roll over and fall from a serious height.

Massage to strengthen the muscles

During the first year of life, a child (even a healthy one) should receive about three massage courses. Usually they are made in 3, 7 and 10-12 months. Many mothers say that after a massage, babies become more active, relaxed, and skilled. Usually, after the first course of massage, babies begin to turn over actively, after the second course they improve their crawling skills, and after the third course they begin to walk independently. This, of course, does not mean that a child without a massage will not turn over, will not crawl and will not go. But such an impact will enormously push the child to new skills. After all, massage is considered a passive muscle workout. So, how to do a massage so that the child learns to roll over on its own?

Massage to strengthen the muscles of the child

Massage should take place in a warm room, the child should be in a good mood. If the crumb is sick or naughty, the procedure is better to postpone the next day. Prepare clean diapers and massage oil.

Begin the massage with a study of the feet and toes on the legs. Carefully knead and rub the foot, not only from the sole, but also from the back. After that, knead the calf and hips of the baby. If the crumbs have problems with tone, you need to do different movements. With increased tone, you need to stroke and relax the muscles, and at reduced stimulation, you need to stimulate them with spanking and light strokes with the edge of the palm. After the foot massage you need to go to the hands - carefully knead the palms, hands, elbows, shoulders. Rub, knead, pinch the crumbs, but so that it does not hurt. Mom in the process can talk with the child so that he is not afraid.

When the limbs are well-massaged, do not forget about the chest, tummy and back. In the end, be sure to massage the neck. Ideally, a specialist should do the massage, because he knows about the features of a massage with various deviations. However, if the baby is completely healthy, the mother can do the massage herself. In general, it would be nice if the mother brought the child to a massage session with a specialist and remembered all the movements that she herself could repeat at home.

Water treatment

You can train your child’s body with the help of bathing. Water perfectly stimulates the muscles - it reduces the actual weight of the child, so that it is much easier for him to control his body. Swimming circles are very useful, which can be used after a month of baby's age. It is put on the child’s neck, secured with a sturdy clasp, and the crumb goes down into the water. In this case, the child has complete freedom of movement - his mother's hands do not limit him, he is simply in free swimming within a large bath. In addition, such a device frees mother from continuous standing with the letter “sic” and tearing of the waist.

Why the child does not turn over

It happens that the baby, despite all the efforts of the parents and a solid age (closer to six months), still does not want to roll over. There may be several reasons for this.

  1. Overweight Many mothers know that the large weight of the child makes it difficult for him to move. Full kids learn many skills much later than they should be. But this does not mean that you need to feed your child, God forbid. Just accept the fact that your baby will master all the skills a little later.
  2. Character. Curious kids, who, as they say, have an awl in one place, learn to roll over, crawl and walk faster. However, there are others - phlegmatic thinkers who don’t need to be in a hurry somewhere. If your baby is like this, do not scold him, but accept the temperament of your child. After all, we all, as well as children, are different.
  3. Tone. Hypertonus and hypotonia can affect the development of events. It can be diagnosed by a neurologist.
  4. Birth injuries or illnesses. If the baby has a diagnosis, there is no need to talk about any norms. In this case, the forecasts and norms are strictly individual.

If you are worried that the baby does not turn over, refer to a good orthopedist, neurologist, pediatrician. Doctors from a professional point of view will help you determine whether this is normal or pathological.

The ability to roll over - one of the first major achievements of the crumbs. Catching up with him daily - doing exercises, massage, and performing water procedures, the child will learn to roll over very soon.
