Kuksha - description, habitat, interesting facts

The one who first saw the flight of a kuksh will certainly begin to admire the emerging beauty. The bird is really beautiful, and deserves close attention from both bird watchers and ordinary people.

 Kuksha

This feathered representative received such a somewhat unusual name not by chance. When a bird utters a cry, it is akin to the muffled “kook” sound. The variety of Russian dialects suggests many other names of this representative of the bird kingdom. For example, one of the characters in Boris Pasternak’s novel “Doctor Zhivago” calls her “Ronzh”. So they call her in the Urals.

External characteristics

Kuksha is a partying group, the family of corvids. Externally, it has a great resemblance to the jay. Very beautiful is the flight of this bird. During it, her wings take the form of a circle. It is difficult to disagree with the fact that it is necessary to observe such a picture infrequently. The tail has a bright orange color. When a bird goes flying, it becomes very large in width. For the thin paws of the feathered representative gray is characteristic. A small head is crowned with a small dark beak.

The overall size of the bird is small, and the weight does not exceed 110 grams. The body can be up to 27 cm in length. There is a difference in the plumage of the male and the female, but it is so insignificant that it is difficult for a non-specialist to notice.

Power Specifications

In food, the bird is picky and eats everything that only meets on its way. However, the balance of scales outweighs slightly towards animal feed. Animal food is represented by various insects and their larvae. Basically, they all belong to the order of Diptera insects. If a small animal or a larger animal meets her path, but is sick and unable to protect herself, she can easily attack him.

Often there are worms in her diet. Along with animal food, kuksh is not averse to eat and products of plant origin. These can be seeds of various cereals. The bird will not deny itself the pleasure of eating berries and fruits. An interesting fact is that even mushrooms can be present in her diet. Very often, in search of food, the bird flies into the courtyards of people's homes.

Breeding features

In early spring, these birds actively form pairs. During this period, you can often observe bird "disassembly". Young males do everything possible and even impossible in order for the female to turn its attention to the young feathered representatives. When, however, the male achieves the desired, a pair is formed. Using the material at hand, the male and female together in the tree organize a nest. Absolutely everything is used, from branches to dry grass. In the finished nest the female lays up to 5 eggs. After that, she settles on them and begins to hatch chicks. Of course, the male helps him with his second half, but nevertheless, mainly the role of a guard is prepared for him in this action.

 Features breeding kukshi

The female will sit on the eggs for almost three weeks. After that, chicks appear. Until the birds start flying, the whole family is busy feeding them. However, in a more mature age, parents gradually feed up their pets.Characteristically, the family is distinguished by strong friendship.

Being in the wild, the bird is able to live up to 12 years.

Some interesting facts

Sometimes the behavior of a kukshi can be unusual:

  1. Even in the case of a clear threat, the female will never leave the nest.
  2. The literature describes cases when chicks from neighboring nests were eaten by a female.
  3. Brood from neighboring nests, united, can form a large group. In this composition, they travel and get food.

Habitat characteristic

The bird is sedentary. However, with the onset of apparent cold weather, the kuksh tends to migrate to warmer lands. For their habitat they prefer forests where cedar and spruce grow. In winter, birds can be combined with the formation of fairly large groups. Kuksh forms its nests away from other feathered representatives. A man is not afraid of a bird, even allows himself to photograph. Leads a rather mobile and noisy lifestyle, completely not hiding from others.

The bird is well known to the inhabitants of the northern regions, since for the most part it lives there. Residents of other regions have less understanding of this bird. Quite early kuksh learns to sing. However, at first it looks like an incoherent, muffled mutter. When a bird becomes more mature, its singing is so delightful that they can simply be heard. The singing of a kuksh is somewhat similar to that of a bullfinch. But the bird sings very quietly, so it is not always possible to hear it.
