By sea sandpit is meant a bird from the family of snipe, living preferably in water sources, as the name suggests. Birds are distinguished by their attitude towards humans; they are not at all afraid of people and can exist with them on the same territory. Oversized waders grow in size to approximately 20 cm, but in nature there were members of the family much more. As for the wingspan, these figures fluctuate within 40 cm. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, we will study step by step the main features of birds.
Description
- When an individual puts on his outfit in the mating season, it looks pretty motley. The area behind the neck is bright, the feathers on the shoulders and back are reddish with ocherous patches. Often, when dressed in a wedding dress, birds do not lose particles of gray plumage remaining from the winter period.
- Individuals that have barely crossed the threshold of one year old look quite tired. They have an untidy appearance, which has not yet been formed in terms of color to the end of feathering. When the representatives of the group grow up, they acquire a grayish shade of the body in the winter. Young animals in August-September are also practically no different, the upper part of the head is gray, dark.
- A distinctive feature of the younger generation is the fact that in the thorax the specks are brighter than in adults. And the feathers in the parietal part, on the shoulders and back of the narrow, white with a rim of ocher tone. It looks contrast.
- As for the winter vestments, clear contours cease to be so. The ocher is lost, the image itself looks blurry. In the region of the sternum, on the lateral parts of the hull the feathers are dull and gray.
- Birds living in the eastern side of Europe are ranked as the nominative subspecies. In comparison with other members of the family, these birds are squat, knocked down, with a short neck, medium legs and dark feathers.
- If you compare a seabird, for example, with a dunlin, the first one has no spots on the chest. Also, the legs of birds are painted orange with a yellow undertone. The bill is dark in color, even black. At the base of the beak there are faded orange particles of color.
- Individuals are common in the expanses of our country. They prefer to live in the tundra. They are also present on the arctic islands. For wintering, these birds must come to Russia, live near icy areas and snow-covered areas.
Nutrition
- Often, in search of food, the individuals in question live on the shores of various bodies of water and stones protruding from the water. Also, birds can often run on the coast during low tide. In such places, feathered birds regale with a large accumulation of brown algae.
- In addition, birds often include in their diet all kinds of worms, mollusks, insects, crustaceans and fry. Also, birds sometimes feed on green algae. In some cases, with an insufficient amount of food, individuals can afford to eat berries and various seeds of plants.
- During low tide on the shore during the feeding period, it is possible to observe not only sandboxes that live directly in this area, but also other birds. The latter can nest a few kilometers from the mainland tundra.
- As for the mainland itself. It is in its depth that individuals feed mainly on the larvae of flies, aphids, imago, horsemen, pupae, and collembola. In addition, the ringed worms, spiders, plant food and snails can be included in the diet of such birds.
- The considered individuals often feed on food that lies freely in the open area. Also, such food can be located in algae. It is worth noting that these birds, unlike their relatives, do not immerse their beak in the substrate. Therefore, they are not looking for food by touch.
- Often, considered birds produce food on slippery surfaces or rocks. For the same reason, you can see that these birds practically do not run. They prefer to walk steadily. In addition, sandboxes are good swimmers.
Breeding
- It is worth noting that during the mating season the birds break up into permanent pairs. They are faithful to each other until the end of life. As soon as individuals appear on nesting sites, couples begin to form over 5 days.
- Birds make nests in the ground, in some cases under shrubs. Sometimes dwellings can be seen among the stones or in the crevices of the rocks. As the pavement of the bird put pieces of moss and various leaves. Often the female lays up to 3 eggs.
Sandboxes are calm and peace-loving birds. Monogamous couples are formed during the mating season. The male is predominantly engaged in vidido. Closer to the birth of chicks, the female leaves the nest altogether.
