The Weimaraner or Weimar Pointer is a hunting mate breed of dogs of Germanic origin. The hunting group to which this breed belongs is the Continental Pointing Dog.

With the help of top flair, the Weimaraner can search for game without difficulty, even under adverse weather conditions, including during strong winds, and thanks to the lower flair it takes a good mark. Appearance

1. The Weimar Pointer is a rather large dog, it has well developed skeleton and muscles, the general parameters of growth vary between 60-70 cm, it can weigh from 25 to 40 kg.

The Weimaraner long coat is soft and pleasant to the touch, it has a slightly pronounced undercoat, and hair is present in the area of ​​the ears, abdomen, chest and tail. In the short-haired breed, the hairline is rather thick, shiny, it fits very tightly to the body, it does not have a pronounced undercoat. However, there are Weimaraners whose wool cover belongs to the third, mixed type. The coat of such dogs is rather thick, has moderate feathering and is of medium length.
3. The wool color of the Weimar Pointer is exclusively gray, from pale ashy to dark gray. It is noteworthy that the head and ears are lighter in color in several colors than the whole body and paws, also quite often, a slightly noticeable, dark-gray band can pass through the entire back. Sometimes you can find Weimaraner with small white markings on the paws and chest.
4. The Weimar Pointer has a dry head, and there is a pronounced groove on it, which runs across its non-convex forehead. Cheeks pronounced and distinct, the shape of the muzzle is elongated. The shape of the eyes is round, the color of the iris in an adult dog is exclusively dark or light amber shades. For puppies of this breed is characterized by a blue tint of the iris, which as they grow, changes its color. The appearance of the Weimar Pointer is rather pleasant, the nose has a slightly convex back and a large lobe, preferably gray-brown. The location of the ears is very peculiar, which is explained by the purpose of the breed, they are set quite high and rush forward, of medium width and necessarily hang down.

The history of the breed

The Weimar Pointer breed was recognized in 1896 in Germany. It is noteworthy that the wide distribution of dogs, which outwardly were very similar to modern Weimaraners, began in the 17th century. They were popular among hunters because, thanks to their exceptional abilities, they were very helpful in the process of hunting wild birds. However, to date there is unknown reliable information that relates to the occurrence of the breed of the Weimar Pointing Dog.

There are several official versions of how these dogs appeared. The first version is that Duke Karl Augustus of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach brought this breed of dogs to Germany from the Czech Republic. The consonant of the second version of the Weimaraner is a descendant of the marriage breed, which is also a hunting dog and has lived in Germany for more than one century.In past centuries, the Weimar Pointer was actively involved in the process of hunting a large beast. The story is full of facts about how this breed was effectively used during the catch of wild boar, roe deer and even a bear.

Character of the weimar dog

To breed this breed is not desirable for those people who are not able to devote to it a lot of time. This is explained by the fact that the Weimaraner belongs to those dog breeds that are strongly attached to their owner on an emotional level. A thoughtless barking is not inherent in her, if she gives a voice, it is exclusively on the merits. All this once again proves that the Weimar Pointer will become for its owner a wonderful friend and a devoted hunter, and will bring him great pleasure.

Keeping and caring for a dog

This breed of dog is very in need of long walking, and certainly several times a day. You should also considerthat a walk with such a dog should be not only long, but also fascinating for her, since just walking a few hours through the park is not at all what this animal needs. The most optimal way to spend time with the Weimar Dog is to teach her to perform several disciplines that can be useful not only during a walk, but also on an intended hunt, for example, ajdity or frisbee. Due to the fact that this breed is very freedom-loving and active, weimaraner simply will not be able to sit in one place in a confined space for a long time.

Another distinctive feature, which is caused by the dog's affection for its owner, is that the Weimaraner is difficult to tolerate living apart from the owner. Consequently, the residence of such a dog in an open-air cage or booth, as well as restricting access to housing is not highly recommended. If she lives outside the house and has little contact with her owner, it is possible that apathy will appear in her behavior, as well as refusal to execute commands. Thus, the dog can protest about his place of residence, or not perception of the owner as such.Aggression in the behavior of the Weimar cop is quite rare, which in turn means that it would not be advisable to start it to protect the house. However, in the event of any threat to her or her master, she may well act as a protector.

Caring for such dogs is relatively easy to carry out, since it does not require regular special procedures, it is enough just to brush the coat once a week. It is recommended to bathe the Weimar dog several times a year, two or three, at the discretion of the host. Upon returning from a walk, a pet will only need to wipe its paws.

Once or twice a week, the Weimaraner must clean the ears, it is also necessary to adhere to oral hygiene in the form of daily tooth brushing, and to trim the claws several times a month.

You can feed both natural food and ready-made dry food. If the second option is chosen, it is necessary to take a responsible attitude to the choice of food and not to feed the dog with cheap food with an incomprehensible composition, since this will negatively affect the future health of the pet.It is strictly forbidden to feed the animal with the food that the host uses in everyday life. This is due to the fact that it may be too oily or flavored with various spices, which can harm the dog's body. Sweets also do not bear any benefit for the dog.

Training and education

This breed responds well to training, in the case when the owner begins to deal with it with the dog at an early age. So that the commands are successfully mastered and carried out by the dog, excessive overloading and pointing tone should be avoided. If the Weimar Pointer is meant as a companion, in order to give it education and obedience, it will be enough to complete a general training course.

When the dog is planned to be used for its intended purpose, for hunting purposes, when it reaches the age of 4-5 months, during a raid on the nature, you should take it with you. The Weimaraner is accustomed to hunt from a very early age so that he can gradually understand all the details of this matter.Also for the effective participation of the Weimar dog in the hunting process, the owner must calculate the optimal daily load for the dog, any dog ​​sport is not excluded.

Health and Disease

Weimaraner has a lifespan of 10-12 years. The main role in the life of this dog is played by the implementation of timely vaccinations and the prevention of various diseases.

The owner must carefully monitor the appearance of such dangerous signs of the disease as: a temperature leap in an animal, an upset stomach, a change in gait, the appearance of discharge from the mucous membranes of the nose or eyes. Self-treatment of an animal is strictly prohibited. In case of any suspicious symptoms, you should immediately contact a veterinarian. In addition, it is necessary to periodically undergo a preventive examination of the dog in order to establish the overall assessment of its state of health. In order to provide the first emergency aid to a pet, a veterinary first aid kit should be kept at home.

This breed has no predisposition to any specific diseases; on the contrary, it is distinguished by its durability and good immunity.However, with age, due to increased mobility and physical exertion, hip joint dysplasia is not excluded. Allergic reactions, demodicosis, dermatitis, eye diseases in the form of cataracts, corneal atrophy, and dysthyasis are also common.
